What Are Cavities?
Dental caries is the destruction of tooth tissues caused by the presence of acids produced by plaque bacteria deposited on tooth surfaces. This tooth decay is heavily influenced by lifestyle influences what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth (our hygiene), the presence of fluoride in salt and toothpaste we use. Heredity also plays an important role in the susceptibility of your teeth to decay.
Adults are especially at risk for cavities if they suffer from dry mouth, which is caused by the lack of saliva disorder due to some diseases, the use of some medications, and treatments of radiation and chemotherapy. Dry mouth can be temporary or permanent, depending on its origin.
Cavities can be serious because if untreated, can destroy the tooth and kill the delicate nerves inside, which can cause an abscess (infection in the root end). Once formed an abscess, the only treatment is endodontics (also called root canal treatment), surgery or tooth extraction.
Cause of dental caries
Many different types of bacteria live in our mouths and accumulate in the teeth in a sticky film called plaque. When we eat and drink, these bacteria produce acids that can dissolve the protective layer beneath the plate retained. The acid removes minerals from the enamel, which if untreated can cause carié. Decomposition begins in the main part of the tooth (enamel) and decomposes as enamel decay can go deeper into the dentin and finally reach the nerve (pulp) of the tooth.
Prevention of dental caries
Brushing teeth and using dental everyday yarn; this will help reduce the amount of dental plaque and bacteria in the mouth.
The consumption of sugary or starchy less frequently during the day foods to help reduce the amount of acids that harm teeth in the mouth.
The use of fluoride toothpaste, which strengthens teeth and fluoride treatments provided by the dentist or take fluoride supplements as recommended by the dentist.
The use of antibacterial mouthwashes to reduce levels of bacteria that cause cavities.
Sugarless gum; This can help reduce bacterial growth.
